The British Standards Institution has named LSE the first carbon neutral university in the UK.
Direct emissions from the university have dropped by 44% since 2005, supported by an investment in 2015 of £4.8 million into energy efficiency systems and building upgrades. 100% of its electricity comes from renewable sources – a feat its held since 2009.
BSI awarded the university carbon neutral certification due to its verified low emissions and LSE has plans to reach the next step of net zero through its Sustainability Strategic Plan.
One of its aims is to immerse sustainability in all teaching and learning, to help empower students to build a sustainable future.
Chair of LSE’s Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, Professor Nicholas Stern, said that higher educations institutions “have a duty to show leadership and advocate for decisive action in tackling climate change”.
